The lake was created as part of the Panama Canal, between 1907 and 1913 by the building of the Gatun Dam across the Chagres River. For many years it was the largest man-made lake in the world and the Gatun Dam was also the largest of its kind.
It is an scenic spot on this famed passage between the oceans. Huge vessels and many boats transit this important lake every day surrounded by a beautiful landscape, rainforest Tropical Jungle; where is common to spot monkeys, reptiles, sloths, rodents, among many other species. The exuberant vegetation at Gatun Lake is also a paradise for an abundance of bird species and the fishing is excellent.
